Make a Cell Phone Case out of a Sock

Does your phone need a case to slip into for when it's in your purse? If you're afraid of scuffing your new phone while setting it down in various places, consider transforming a basic sock into a useful, protective and shock-absorbent phone case. You only need simple sewing skills to complete this task, and as a bonus, it reuses an unpaired sock!

Steps

Transforming a child's sock into a phone cover

  1. Gather your sock and sewing supplies. Check before proceeding that your cell phone will fit in the top half of the sock, beneath the cuff and still allow for an extra half-inch of seam allowance.
  2. Cut off the lower part of your sock. Cut horizontally across the ankle. Discard the lower portion of the sock.
  3. Turn the top of the sock inside out.
  4. Stitch the bottom together by hand. Use a straight stitch, leaving a half-inch seam allowance.
  5. Turn the sock right side out.
  6. Attach a set of small Velcro circles, to the inside of the cuff, to enable you to secure the opening and open it with ease.
  7. Finished.

Transforming a plain sock into a bejeweled phone cover

  1. Find a plain, clean sock that has lost its other pair.
  2. Cut the sock up halfway. Take the top part for transforming into a phone case. Turn it inside out.
  3. Get your sewing kit. Thread the needle, then tie a knot.
  4. Proceed to sew along the edge of one cut end of the sock.
  5. Turn the stitched sock the right way out.
  6. Decorate the sock. Design a pattern for the jewels/beads. This might be circles around the sock or a design, such as a letter, a flower or the basic face outline of an animal. Glue the gems or beads in place following your design.
  7. Done. The cell phone can now be slipped into the case whenever you need to keep it safe and snug.

Super simple ankle sock and tie case

This is a handy method if you're out at the gym or you've lost your phone case and need to make an emergency one before getting to the store for a new one.

  1. Find a clean pair of ankle socks. Check that they will fit around your cell phone.
    • The best type of sock to use is a sock that's the size and length of your phone.
    • Do not to use long length socks, as there should be no cutting involved.
  2. Put your cell phone into one sock.
  3. Put the sock with the phone inside the other sock.
  4. Take a hair tie. Use it to tie the top together so that your phone won't slide out.

Tips

  • Velcro can be found at most fabric and craft stores.
  • Use the discarded portion of the sock to make into other crafts, such as a sock puppet or stuffed full of catnip and stitched closed, for a cat toy.
  • Make sure you know how to use a needle and thread. If not, ask for assistance––it's a very easy project and a good one to learn basic sewing on.
