Stitch a Felt Cell Phone Cozy
A cell phone cozy can be whipped up quickly and easily using felt as the basic fabric and some strong thread. Even a fairly novice sewer can give this project a go and still achieve a terrific, fun result.
Steps
- Gather the materials. Choose felt colors you like most, or the favorite colors of the gift recipient. Prefer strong felt over thinner, cheaper felt which will wear too quickly.
- Measure the felt of one color. The average small cell phone will fit a measurement of 4 1/4" width and 3" length rectangle. Cut two rectangles to this size. If you think that the phone will be larger, then simply increase the rectangle size.
- Place the two rectangles in on top of each other. Cut neat rounded edges on the corners of one end of the rectangles. This will form the rounded design for the base of the pouch. Try to keep these cuts as even in shape and size as possible.
- Take the other color piece of felt and cut out a shape. The shape is of your choosing but good designs include a star, an oval, a square, a musical note, a mini phone shape, etc. All you need to ensure is that it will fit well within the upper rectangle with space on each side around this design, especially the top where the button will be added to the cozy. It is recommended that you follow a template to cut this shape, as this will keep it even.
- Embroider a design onto the felt shape piece. The embroidered design can be anything, such as your initials, buttons on a phone, a musical note, a singing bird, a favorite animal, a flower, a cross, an anchor, etc. It can help to flip through a book of embroidery designs for inspiration.
- Pin the embroidered felt piece onto one of the rectangles cut out in step two (the front piece). Ensure that it is centered neatly and leaves enough room at the top for a button and leaves room at the sides for stitching together the cozy rectangles; align it to fit about 1/2" from the base of the rectangle.
- Sew the embroidered felt piece onto the rectangle using overcast stitch.
- Find the center at the top of the rectangle and attach the button.
- Cut out an oval shape from the same color felt used for the embroidered felt piece. To make it, cut out a rectangle shape measuring 2 1/2" x 2". Then use scissors to round the corners until you have formed and oval.
- Stitch around the border of the oval using overcast stitch. Once done, sew the oval to the other rectangle piece (the back of the cozy). To do this, align the oval so that it sits centrally at the top of the back piece, about one inch sitting on the felt. Attach to the rectangle using running stitch.
- Align the front and back pieces of the pouch together, with the embroidered part facing outward on the front and the attached oval facing outward on the back piece, so that you can fold the rest of the oval over to the front piece. Secure the sides and rounded base together neatly using pins. Using blanket stitch, stitch around the edges with a contrasting color of embroidery floss. Use a strong, large needle to make it easier to work the fabric and push the floss through. Leave the opening unstitched - this is where you'll insert the phone.
- Insert a small centered button hole to the non-attached end of the oval. Fold over the top to check that the button shuts over the buttonhole.
- Attach a ribbon to one corner to serve as a hanger. Fold a 4" ribbon in half and sew onto the inner right hand side of the cozy's pocket. Only stitch the back side of the pocket or you'll close the cozy. A key-ring can now be attached to the ribbon loop for hanging the case to a bag or other place.
- Finished.
Tips
- This pouch can also hold a music player.
- If you don't want to add a felt design to the front, simply embroider directly onto the cozy rectangle. Obviously, do this before stitching the cozy together.
