Steps

Planning Your Kind of Date

  1. Eat. Dinner out at a restaurant is a classic Valentine's tradition However, you may find most restaurants overbooked or overpriced for that very reason. If you want to take him out to eat, make reservations as far in advance as you can. Plan to eat at home, or pack a romantic picnic if the weather permits.
    • Hire a professional chef or a talented single friend to cook the two of you a romantic dinner at home.
    • If one of you works on Valentine's day, consider meeting up for a brief lunch. It will be too rushed to constitute the main event of your day, but it is a romantic gesture.
    • Breakfast in bed is another classic romantic gesture. If your partner doesn't like eating in bed, just popping out of bed before him and having it ready by the time he gets up is a kind act.
    • If your husband really loves cooking, give him the gift of appreciation. Tell him you're dying to eat a home-cooked meal, maybe make a special request for something you think he could make, then sit back and watch him cook.
    • Cooking together can also be romantic. If you guys can stand a little cheese, buy matching aprons.
    • If you're feeling foxy, consider cooking in only aprons.
    • Timing is everything. If you are planning a heavy meal at home or at a restaurant, eat late. Get your romantic time together before you head out, as you may be too full and sleepy after a large meal to enjoy one another's company afterward.
  2. Drink like royalty. If you and your partner drink alcohol, drink something nicer than usual on this occasion. Get a bottle of nice wine, or buy a growler from a local beer distributor. Buy ingredients to replicate a kind of cocktail you both enjoy, and mix it up as a surprise.
    • Design a new cocktail. If you're crafty, make a custom cocktail using flavors your husband enjoys. If you plan a week ahead, you can make a custom liqueur for the special drink.[1]
    • Give your cocktail a personalized name, or tell him it's an aphrodisiac.
    • Beer doesn't have to feel casual or inelegant. Opt for a locally brewed beer with a high alcohol content, and serve it in champagne flutes or wine glasses.[2]
    • Red wine is a classic romantic drink for a reason. All alcohol could be considered an aphrodisiac, but red wine is even more so.[3]
  3. Get active. Valentine's Day doesn't have to be all dinner and swooning. If you and your husband are outdoorsy, consider taking a hike, hitting a rock-climbing gym, or taking an excursion on a boat. If you enjoy dancing together, go dancing.
    • Sign up for a one-off class and learn a new kind of couple's dance.
    • If you're already expert ballroom dancers, consider a romantic team activity, like AcroYoga or a couples-oriented contact improv class.
    • Hike somewhere gorgeous and have a picnic.
    • If your February's snowy, go ice skating or sledding together, or take a trip to a ski lodge.
  4. Travel. Being in a new place will make your special day all the more special. Book a weekend trip to a nearby town, or find a cheap flight to a totally foreign place. Make the journey part of the celebration. Pack media you can enjoy together, and make pit stops in interesting places.
    • Consider taking a long train ride together instead of flying or driving. You can watch romantic movies with headphones in and eat a delicious meal that you pack.
    • Sleep in a hotel. Even if you can't afford a trip out of town, consider booking a room in a hotel for the night. Staying in your town doesn't mean you have to follow your ordinary routine.
    • Take a trip to an activity you can enjoy together. Book a day visit to a spa, or camp at some natural hot springs.

Creating Atmosphere

  1. Dress for it. No matter the kind of date you plan, wearing something new, or something he especially loves, will help the day feel special. If you wear dresses, try a slinky dress, or a curve-hugging skirt. If you wear suits, wear a well-tailored suit and an open collared shirt. Opt for fabric that feels good to the touch, like silk or velvet. If you aren't worried about matching the décor, wear red.[4]
    • Consider underwear. Wearing lingerie under your beautiful outfit will make every step of dressing and undressing a Valentine's day activity. Think sheer panties or boxer briefs, thigh highs, a garter belt, a thong, or a bustier.
    • Dress him up too. If your husband is the kind of guy who likes to be dressed up, embrace that. Buy him something you know he wants, or something you think he'd look especially hot in.
    • The same ideas that work for you work for him. You can get him clothes to show off, or something more intimate to wear just for you. If you're going hiking for Valentine's day, you can even get him some attractive exercise wear, like shiny bike shorts or a mesh tank top.
    • If your husband prefers feeling in control of his own outfit, plan ahead. Tell him you want to buy him something special, and look around online together till you find the right thing.
  2. Decorate or go to a beautiful place. The place you'll be spending time together should be beautiful. You might go to an elegant restaurant, take a hike at sunrise, or walk the beach at sunset. Depending on your aesthetic, you and your husband might enjoy a stroll through a community garden, a visit to an art-deco movie theater, or a visit to a graffitied canal.
    • If you are decorating at home, put out clean tablecloths in dark or warm colors. Stick some candles in candle holders or old wine bottles, or make floating candles.
    • Clean up. A mess is depressing, and draping it with streamers is like giving up. If you're celebrating at home, tidy your home. Put away all evidence of work.
    • Put flowers in a vase, and drop petals on the tablecloth or into the bowl of floating candles.
    • Food might provide all the scent you need, but buying fragrant flowers or burning incense can also contribute to the atmosphere.
  3. Smell like food. Certain odors seem to increase male sexual arousal. Strangely, most of them can be found in food.[5] The smell of pumpkin pie and lavender together is hugely effective, followed by a doughnut/black licorice combination. The scent of oranges, lavender, cola, lily of the valley, buttered popcorn, vanilla, and musk are all potent stimulants as well.
    • Wear perfume with notes of lavender, orange, musk, or lily of the valley.
    • Bake a pumpkin pie or tart with a lavender-herbed butter crust. Take it out of the oven right before dinner so the house is full of the smell.
    • Make rum-and-coke cocktails and drink them with a black liquorice straw.
  4. Play upbeat music. Though it may be tempting to go full Beethoven on Valentine's day, studies show that upbeat music has a positive effect on men's arousal, while music that invokes a negative mood has a dampening effect.[6] Play jazz, classical, or hip hop that has a positive vibe.
    • Keep the volume low so you can talk.
  5. Be alone. If you and your husband have children, get a babysitter and get out of the house. If you want to be at home, ask a family member to watch the kids, or arrange a sleepover. If you live with housemates or other family members and you can't shoo them away for the evening, set up your date in your room rather than in the kitchen.

Making it Personal

  1. Determine the kind of gift your husband will find meaningful. When you give someone a present, you're saying something to that person. What do you want to say to your husband with his V-Day gift? "I love you" is easy to say. "I love you, and I support your commitment to running every weekend" is best said with new running shoes.
    • Ask yourself if he would most enjoy a public declaration of love, a thoughtful homemade gift, a perfectly practical gift, or a gift that speaks to something you admire about him.
    • Don't forget the Valentine's Day standbys. Does your husband like chocolate? Flowers? Red wine? Champagne? Woo him with classic gestures.
  2. Fulfill a fantasy. Think of something you always wanted to experience, but never got to do. Ask your husband about his fantasies. If he's shy or says he doesn't have any, don't give up. Share your fantasy, and let him know that you are open to hearing about his. You can do this weeks before Valentine's Day, or you can initiate the conversation the day of.
    • Be prepared for the possibility that he may have fantasies you find gross or boring. Listen non-judgmentally, and don't react too quickly.
    • You don't have to fulfill a fantasy just because you know about it. However, talking about it gives you the opportunity to consider it.
    • If you do decide to fulfill one another's fantasies, talk about it thoroughly beforehand. Don't spring a scenario on him without his consent!
    • Determine a safe word for new erotic pursuits. If you or he feels uncomfortable at any point, say the word!
  3. Plan, but include surprises. A week or two beforehand, let your husband know that you are planning Valentine's Day so that he doesn't make conflicting plans. If he does have ideas, coordinate with him. You can both be in charge of part of the festivities.
    • However, don't tell him every step of your design. Some elements—a gift, a special dessert, etc—should be a surprise.
    • Surprises are more stimulating than pleasures that have been planned.[7]
