Tell Your Mother You're Pregnant when You Are a Teen
Are you a pregnant teen and don't know how to tell your mother? This article should make it a lot easier for you.
Contents
Steps
- First, confirm that you are actually pregnant. This is important because you don't want to go up to your mom, tell her your pregnant, when you aren't.
- Tell someone else you trust first, like a very close friend or a teacher or Talk to a School Counselor.
- Sit down with your mother, and tell her that you need to discuss something very important with her.
- Tell her that you made a very big mistake and you decided to tell her, make sure you say that you know she won't judge you.
- Then tell her that you are pregnant. She might immediately want to know who the father is. Tell her, and don't lie about it. Be completely honest with her.
- Understand that most parents are very supportive of their children (even after you've ignored their advice and done something foolish). If they haven't abused you in the past, they're unlikely to start now.
Tips
- Choose a good time to talk to your mother, not when she comes home from work, or is tired or you just had a fight with her.
- Tell her when she is completely calm and in a decent mood. You never want to feel the wrath of your mother.
- This might be a lot easier when you have an open relationship with your parents.
- Don't tell your mother while she's at work. That is a terrible idea. Take her out to lunch, or dinner, or whatever. Get out of the house in a public place where it is still quiet enough for the two of you to have a private conversation. This will keep her calm enough not to freak out while in public.
- Try calling your mom when she's away from the house, like at work early in the day. That way she'll be able to cool down and think about it before she gets home. Things will probably be more calm if she has time to think about it and react without you there to be yelled at.
Warnings
- Don't wait too long to tell your mother.
- Make sure that you are really pregnant!
- Make sure that the friend will not tell everyone.
- Don't back away, it might seem tough to talk about. But you have to.
- If your parents start getting angry or violent, you may need to leave the room.
- Be sure to go to your mom or dad with a plan. If you are interested in adoption pick an agency to prove how mature you are. If you really want to have an abortion then get some information or even a list of all the risks that may occur from an abortion. If you plan on keeping the baby make a plan for finishing high school, becoming educated and most importantly financing this baby and yourself now. Especially if you do not have a job yet!
- If she has never met the father don't bring him with you to tell her you're pregnant.
